by Ravin McKelvy
How long oh Lord will I tear at my braided hair
Thinking my curls a beast to be tamed
Will I forever beat my chest, longing for its darkness to run in fear
How long will I see my brothers fallen in the street
Soldiers slain in a war they never understood
Will violence always be the way of the land
A lust for blood the thorn in its flesh
Why has beauty been torn from my mother
Dignity stripped from my father
Must I always wipe my sister’s tears
Begging her mind to forget the taunting
How long oh Lord
For my bones have turned to lead
My throat to gravel.
How long
For my family is weary
And we know that is is You who gives
Rest.
